Medicare supplements work in conjunction with original Medicare. There are also called “Medigap” policies and are offered by private insurance companies.

They pay for the “gaps” in the original Medicare program. They cover deductibles, co pays, and some other medical services that are not provided by original Medicare.

Selecting a Medicare Plan can be confusing and often becomes a difficult process. However, the plans were all standardized by HHS in 1992. The plans are identified by letters (A-N) except in a few states. All plans offer the same basic benefits and others include additional coverage like foreign travel and excess coverage. The standardized plans must offer the exact same benefits.

There are some differences:

  • The premium varies with each carrier and there may be some difference in underwriting criteria
  • Customer Service is also a factor to be considered when looking at a particular company and supplement.
  • When comparing coverage and companies be sure to review and compare the same plan from each company.

Some states offer Medicare Select… a policy that requires you to use certain hospitals in order to receive full coverage.

It is important to remember that with the assistance of a Medicare Supplement specialist, you can be prepared and knowledgeable to select the very best option that suits your personal needs.

  • These plans offer the freedom to choose any doctor who accepts Medicare
  • The coverage is nationwide. Can be used anywhere in the U.S.
  • There are no claim forms to be filed
  • These policies are guaranteed renewable as long as the premium is paid by the beneficiary.

Things to remember about Medigap Policies:

  • Part A and B are a must.
  • There will be a monthly premium in addition to your Part B premium
  • You can sign up with a Medigap policy during a 6 month period of time beginning on the 1st day of the month of your birthday.
  • If you join a Medicare Advantage Plan you must remember to drop your Medigap policy coverage.  Please note that there are time factors during the year that allows you to change from Medigap to Medicare Advantage and visa versa.
